Draught of Living Death Cocktail. Time for Harry Potter fans to unite and have a drink this Halloween.  Katherine and I are big Potterheads, and while it will always remind us of Christmas (when the books were usually released), it most definitely is Halloween appropriate.  Witches, magic, evil…you get it.

Every year, one of our favourite bloggers, Half Baked Harvest, does a Harry Potter themed Halloween treat or drink.  And we wanted to get on board, because, well, it’s Harry Potter.  And booze.  Enough said.

This is an incredibly easy drink to make.  We know that Draught of Living Death is supposed to be clear according to the books, but in the movies it looks black, so we’re going with it.  Originally we wanted to make the drink with pisco, and call it Peruvian Instant Darkness, but it tasted better with bourbon.  Also, it sounds spookier.  In the words of Horace Slughorn “So perfect, I dare say one drop would kill us all!”.  You won’t die from ours though, assuming you drink responsibly.

This drink is SO good too.  You’ve got bourbon, lime juice, creme de cassis, and a pinch of cayenne pepper.  That’s it!  The cayenne pepper gives it a nice kick and the creme de cassis compliments the sweet undertones of the bourbon, and gives it a nice fruity flavour without making it sickly sweet.  Use a good bourbon, like Maker’s Mark, for best flavour.  As for the creme de cassis, we recommend Cassis Monna & Filles.  A company that is based just outside Quebec City, on the small island of L’Ile D’Orleans.  Best part? You can order it online!!

How to make the drink?  We like to shake the drink without ice, so the cayenne doesn’t just float on top, then give it a stir with ice for 30-40 seconds to chill the drink.  Then simply strain into a glass (without ice).  So you might be wondering why we have ice in our pictures. Well, it is solely because the glasses were too big and to fill them up would have required a quadruple drink.  Remember the part about drinking responsibly? Yeah, that wouldn’t have worked.  So our drink is showing a bit reddish, but removing the ice keeps it black in colour, with the bonus of not diluting the drink.

Give it a try and let us know what you think! Have a deathly Halloween!
